• Which quest should I do next?

    Hey all,

First I have to say thanks for all your advice so far, I really
appreciate it! I think I'm finally starting to get the hang of
things, especially since I stayed up 'till 3am last night/morning
'cause I was on a roll! I completely cleared out the Super Duper Mart
and the Springvale school! WOOT! Is there anything special to be
done in the Ant tunnel beneath the school? I read a note about
poisoning them and then setting off a bomb.

I've decided to focus on sniping skills and language skills. I'm
tired of melee combat in my games, and for me, sneaking is more fun
(and less stressful). Is the Hunting Rifle the best weapon to go with
for now if I'm going to focus on sniping?

I've been trying the "Those!" quest (LOVE the movie reference there!)
but those Fire Ants are lighting me up like a Fourth of July BBQ! Is
there a special tactic to apply here?

I also have the Galaxy News Radio, Wasteland Survival Guide, and Blood
Ties quests active. I've patrolled the river a bit just north of
Grayditch, but the other side seems quite populated with bad guys, and
I feel like I need to level a bit and gather more equipment. Is Blood
Ties a fairly simple starter quest?

Are there any items other than weapons, ammo, food and water that are
worth picking up? I've noticed lots of parts laying around. Do those
come in handy later when you want to make a rocket launcher? Also,
how soon will I get a house where I can stash stuff?

Finally, is there an easier way to determine what items can be picked
up or searched other than running the mouse pointer over everything?

    Thanks again!

I used the hunting rifle as my default weapon all the way through the
game. I normally used the combat shotgun for close in combat, the
sniper rifle for those really long shots, and the scoped .44 magnum for sniping creatures that the hunting rifle couldn't handle.

I've been trying the "Those!" quest (LOVE the movie reference there!)

You really need a hard hitting weapon for the soldiers and warriors.
The workers are OK with the hunting rifle but the others need a lot more damage than the rifle can provide. Think combat shotgun, .44 magnum, or grenades and mines.

It can be depending on how you play it.

Are there any items other than weapons, ammo, food and water that are
worth picking up? I've noticed lots of parts laying around. Do those
come in handy later when you want to make a rocket launcher? Also,

If you talk to the operator of the water works you will find a buyer for
scrap metal and a lot of the other parts can be sold, just determine if
they are worth the weight to carry them back. As far as the house there
is an option when speaking with the sheriff that will get you some caps
    and a house.

Finally, is there an easier way to determine what items can be picked
up or searched other than running the mouse pointer over everything?

I never found one, and sometimes a valuable item will be hiding under a
    piece of "junk".

    Thanks again!

I am also fairly early on at level 3 & have got myself in that same THOSE! quest..
I'm using that console player.additem 00004330 50 to get lots of Frag Grenades.
I really don't I could be getting anywhere without them...Those Fire Ants
    are super tough.
So my suggestion is get out of there for later or cheat or
We seem to have forgotten to mention that by switching out of the
game to the menu & selecting 'Gameplay' you can set the difficulty
level from 'very easy ......thu to........very hard'
We can change this at any time....I think it only alters the difficulty of
    the combat.
    (\__/)
    (='.'=)
(")_(") mouse (back to the main quest then ?)

As for the house, if your science is ok, you could boost it with mentats to defuse the bomb, and get the house from the get go. I managed that on one of my play throughs.

I thought that quest used Explosives, at least that is what it tells me.
Not that it is that hard to get a sufficient level with them.

No, the bomb in Megaton? You need high science, then you activate the
    control panel on the nuke.

????? Every time I have approached the bomb it says that I need at
least a 25 in Explosives. I can then disarm the bomb or make it go
boom. There is never any mention of Science. I usually complete this
quest by the time I am level 4, that is right after looting the Super
Mart. The only time I use Science is hacking terminals and an
    occasional dialog option.

I was sure that I was able to crack it with science, but it's been a while since I did that. So, off to the guide I go, and you're right, it is the explosives skill. I bumped mine up with mentats, but then got addicted to them!

Hunting rifle is your best friend.

I've been trying the "Those!" quest (LOVE the movie reference there!)
but those Fire Ants are lighting me up like a Fourth of July BBQ! Is
there a special tactic to apply here?

If there are multiple ants in your way, try to disable one's antennae
(with VATS). Ants with crippled antennae go berserk, and attack anything
on sight, including other ants. You are playing sniper, and it will get
easy once you get the hang of it.

I also have the Galaxy News Radio, Wasteland Survival Guide, and Blood
Ties quests active. I've patrolled the river a bit just north of
Grayditch, but the other side seems quite populated with bad guys, and I
feel like I need to level a bit and gather more equipment. Is Blood
Ties a fairly simple starter quest?

Blood ties has fairly less combat, more talk and travel. It is a good one
for starters. Survival guide is fun to do but has lots of sub quests, i suggest you do some of those sub tasks whenever you feel like it. Galaxy
news is the quest for the main story, so I would give it lesser priority
then others. At least until you are level 5-6.

Are there any items other than weapons, ammo, food and water that are
worth picking up? I've noticed lots of parts laying around. Do those
come in handy later when you want to make a rocket launcher? Also, how
soon will I get a house where I can stash stuff?

First, find some weapon recipes, and then carry the junk you need. Also
there are NPCs who pay caps for scrap metal, but usually junk is junk.
Some stuff has zero weight though, that are beneficial to carry, of
    course.

Finally, is there an easier way to determine what items can be picked up
or searched other than running the mouse pointer over everything?

No, you should search anywhere. Alternatively, once you have Dogmeat as
your companion, you can tell him to search for ammo, food etc. and he
    finds them.

I just put points in explosives. It's very worthwhile, if only for the
    storage and the free water.

If you are going to do that make sure you do the Mr Burke episode
    first.
