C2D ,, Nvidia GTX 8800 ,,, latest drivers ...Win XP.
    Fallout 3 has latest patch.

Its a small but &*@?!! annoying glitch. When I Alt-Tab out of the game to
do some desktop thing the game won't restore when I want to un minimize it
    to go back.
I can hear the sound come back on & there's a small flick of the screen
but the desktop stays visible with the game not displaying at all.
Some times (rarely) it does come back up..
I've tried coming out from the game playing screen and from the paused menu
& other tactics to no difference.

This is something I often want to do so can any Bunny suggest please.

This is likely NOT to help with your specific problem, but...

    Suggest you see:
    http://www.tweakguides.com/

Note they have a Game Tweak Guide for Fallout-3 (sidebar)

But you need to also look at:

    - TweakGuides Tweaking Companion

It works fine for me but I've had you problem in other games. You've
obviously tried many of the tricks...

What I sometimes try is pressing Esc before Alt-Tabbing. When you go
back in, pressing Esc again (to go back out of the options screen and
into the game). Works occasionally... nothing to lose.

I also found this happened less when I had plenty of RAM, and that it
would happen/not happen on the same platform after I rebuilt it.

I had a similar problem recently with another game. When I launched
it, I could hear it but there was no display on my screen. Clicking on
it in my task bar did not bring it up. What did work was hitting
ALT-ENTER. Try that next time it happens to you.

Thanks suggestions ..I am or have tried them all...no improvement.
Its just occurred to me that I'm using the Fallout Mod Manager 'fomm' to launch the game. Mainly because I have Fallout 3 installed on Drive E: &
    which is does not like.
I've just found a newer version fomm0.9.13.exe & installed it over existing 0.9.12 . AND ! all that Alt-Tab switching now works proper.
Just tried it 4 or 5 times

I have the same problem. No idea why and yes, it's annoying.
Thankfully, I don't need to switch out of there very often and the
game starts up fairly fast when it's been running previously and lots
of data is in disk cache.

On the other hand, I expect to play FO3 a lot more, I haven't even
started Broken Steel yet and am eagerly awaiting for more DLC,
especially Mothership Zeta. So yes, having a fix to this would be
nice, but OTOH I don't want to fiddle with my system too much since it
    works fine otherwise.

Try using Task Manager to switch back. It usually works.

    Assistance for other problems:

I have problems with my Wallpaper Changer which likes to steal focus
for just long enough to disrupt things. I solved the problem by using
the following .cmd file. The pause command is necessary as the
Launcher program exits when you start the real game and, without the
pause, the .cmd file would continue and restore the Scheduler. I use a
similar file to start each game that gets disrupted by changing the
    wallpaper.

    -----CUT HERE----
    @echo off
    net stop "task scheduler"
    "E:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Fallout 3\FalloutLauncher.exe"
    pause
    net start "task scheduler"

Is this issue on Vista? If it is then try this. Go to comatibility tab
in the properties for the game shortcut and put check marks in Disable
Visueal Themes and Disable Desktop Composition.

No, XP. At least the Fallout Nexus forums seem to think this is a
common problem with no solution, at least no solution that works for
    everyone.
