• Need help in the Super Duper Mart, PLEASE!

    From David Simmons@xenobuzz@att.net to alt.games.fallout on Tuesday, June 02, 2009 00:33:52
    From Newsgroup: alt.games.fallout

Sorry to vent again, but my friend who bought this game for me as a
gift asked me to try it again. I was enjoying it much more until I
reached the Super Duper Mart. Once again, I'm ready to crack the disc
in half and shitcan it so I can save myself many hours of digital
    abuse

What's really chapping my ass is the combat mechanism, whether real
time or using the VATS, which is making me feel like a drunken,
retarded whale on a unicycle trying to shoot the legs off a fly in a
tornado! I'm getting the same disconnect in this game that I got from
Sacred where I never felt like my actions were being immediately
reflected by my character. There's always this soupy lag that makes
me feel like I'm playing with a permanent 3-second delay.

I've tried at least a dozen different ways to clear my way toward the
back, and in every scenario I've had my ass handed to me with all the
grace of the Soup Nazi from Seinfeld. None of my weapons seem to be
worth shit. The Assault Rifle does decent damage, but even with the
VATS precious ammo is wasted. The Laser Rifle does ok, but again,
shots are wasted because my character seems to be cross-eyed unless
the enemy is right in front of him. Do you have to sneak up on every
single enemy to get a decent hit?! I've already played Thief!

I don't like doing things over and over and over again, and the stats- obsession vibe that I'm getting from this game is not encouraging many
more attempts. If I can't realistically defeat all the Raiders in the
store, then why the fuck am I allowed to find my way to it in the
first place?! That's like allowing me to take on Diablo when I'm only
    clvl 3!

Should I save myself further needless torment and find something else
to play that actually entertains me (instead of torturing me
Guantanamo-style) or is there some secret to this area?

I'd love to know as I'd really like to enjoy this game, but right now
it feels like I'm being fucked with sandpaper!

Especially in the beginning you will need to play a Thief type character
to have any chance. Taking out your opponents one at a time, preferably
with sneak attack criticals, is the best way to conserve valuable ammo
and health. Two things that I found really help in the beginning is
above normal (40+) Repair and Sneak skills. The high Repair skill
allows you to fix weapons up to do more damage and the high Sneak allows
you to get that necessary critical first hit.
Another thing that I found helpful in the game is to search everything
for caps, ammo, etc. If you explore the houses in Springvale, and the
mail boxes, it is possible to find a number of useful items that may
    help in the Mart.

A little Bring Down the Console type cheating can make a game fun
while maintaining a decent challenge without to much frustration.
    I'll recommend

    player.additem 00004330 50

for 50 (or what u want ) Frag Grenades
    (\__/)
    (='.'=)
    (")_(") mouse

Thanks for all the suggestions and for bearing with my venting! I got
the feeling this morning that sneaking was the way to go. Should I
consider starting over to put more points in Repair and Sneak?

I never had much trouble with this on the two times through I've played, and both times I did it right off the bat. I can think of two possible reasons
    you might be having trouble.

    1. If you're playing it on a games console I think the game is close to unplayable. I play it on a PC, where you can actually aim at the enemy in combat. I guess console jockeys may disagree - and that's fine - but I tried it on a friend's console and was amazed at how much more difficult aiming
    was.

    2. You might not be aware that you can't just heal your total HP. You have
to also check for damage on your limbs. If you are running around with close to full HP but your head is seriously damaged then the game plays around
with your senses and aiming and makes fighting pretty difficult. The same friend I mentioned wasn't aware of this and he was trying to fight with his head hanging off - and it doesn't work well.

Otherwise, just take your time and don't try to take everyone on at once and you should be fine.

To be honest, I go in with guns blazing, even in the Mart. Once you've
done all the quests in Megaton you should at least been able to take out
a few raiders. Tho if you're doing the primary Mart quest you could
sneak in, grab the stuff, then come back after you level a bit.

Neither does trying to shoot with a crippled arm. Plus you really need

quickly as it gets in worse shape from use.

The levelling is not great at the start. I went into the Super Duper Mart almost immediately, and had a world of problems. So I went away and did something else.

Many of the quests don't directly involve combat, but can give you
experience or items (including money) that will help. You mentioned defusing the bomb in Megaton, do that instead of trying to clear out the Super Duper mart - you can go back when you have better items, skills, and tactics for combat.

If in doubt, the main quest line will take you lots of places and give you lots of opportunities to enhance your character. The Super Duper Mart is really a dead-end plot wise, if you don't like it, don't go there.

An even better beginning "quest" is fixing the water leaks in Megaton
and then selling scrap later. You get a much higher selling price on
the scrap and experience points also.

you lots of opportunities to enhance your character. The Super Duper
Mart is really a dead-end plot wise, if you don't like it, don't go there.

But completing the entire quest with the optional requests and answering
the questions correctly can be beneficial beyond the experience.

perhaps you need to upgrade your computer. adding more ram might be all
you need. 512 meg of ram jsut might not be enuff. on my lil rig i have 8 gigs of rams, i never slowed down since i added it. tho the game load
screens are too fast to read ;/ didnt get to read all the lil hints till
    i got an xbox

the mart is the hardest battle in the begining of the game.
kill 1 or 2 peoples, then go back to megaton n rest up. i prefer the
hunting rifle myself, atleast until the plasma one becomes avail. i boost
up my small guns and repair skills. i dont think in the last 4 games i
have put 1 point to sneak. tho i can see where that would be useful.
also, do not play it set on HARD. not until you understand the combats n such.

i find it an extreamly simple game, that i can loose at.

I found this trivial to complete without resting, of course I use sneak
and target one person at a time. If you get a good head shot, even with
a pistol, while sneaking you will probably kill the target and not even
    alert the others.

I like the fact that with sneak you can get a one shot kill on many
opponents. Cuts down the wear and tear on equipment. Since many of the
best weapons are fairly rare, or unique, keeping them repaired becomes a problem if you wear them out too soon.
Plus if you kill an opponent with a sneak shot quite often the others
never notice, even though they walk right past the headless body, and
you can get yet another chance for a sneak shot.

A very wasteful weapon. I'm only annoyed by the expected innaccuracy
for all weapons. It must be an American thing because if, in real
life, I had to use thirty shots to kill something I'd give up and go
    home.

For most of my shooting career I used a single shot .22 rifle and had
a very high kill rate among the local rat population on my Father's
poultry farm. My average range score with both .22 and .303 was ninety
plus while I was still a teenager. I prefer open sights to scopes any
    day.
