Seems to be no interest here which surprises me. I guess F3 is now all
    rather
    old & not interesting...even in the alt.games.fallout group ??!!
Reviews assorted here...only so -so rating. Poorest of all the F3 DLC's.

I started it up again a couple of weeks ago with the new DLC and it's
been a blast all over again.
I saw that Mothership Zeta is completely indoors, and being indoors is
my least favorite part of FO3. I was planning to skip this one even
if the reviews were good... which they aren't. So I'm not missing out
    on much.

I have no interest in the DLC until it comes out on CD. I prefer having
the physical media if I need to reinstall, etc. As this will probably
be included with other modules it may not be so bad an investment.

Doh, I purchased F3 when it was on sale and forgot I had it. I just finished playing MOHA and thought OK what game should I get next. Thanks for
    reminding me.
F3 is a new game to me. ; ) I think I start playing it now and see if its interesting to me.

Mothership Zeta is apparently the last of the FO3 DLCs.

As it just happens, I am currently playing FO3... again, now in all
its maxed--out graphics glory. I love games with near-unlimited
exploration and the ability to experiment with various tactics and
skills. I suppose you could say that in my 3 or 4 sessions with FO3, I
have completed maybe a quarter of the Main Quest, a few of the major side-quests and a large bunch of mini-quests. When playing RPGs, I am deliberately in no hurry EVER to rush through to the end.. I prefer to
enjoy the scenery, atmosphere, dialog and character interaction of
which there is plenty and of very high quality in FO3.

I am certainly not going to buy any DLC from M$$. I shall await all
the DLC on one DVD... probably in the form of a FO3 GOTY edition
and released at Thanksgiving/Christmas this year. Quite happy to wait
for a sale price. By that time, I just might have got to the end of
    the FO3 Main Quest :-)

The biggest problem I had with Fallout 3, along with games like Far Cry
2, is the inability to climb. This means that the designer can create arbitrary limits on your movement without having to create plausible
reasons. I much prefer the freedom of games like Thief and Assassin's
Creed for the ability to climb over walls on on to roofs. It allows one
to use tactics that are impossible with Fallout 3. I really hate having
to use a subway to go to a location and being attacked as soon as I
exit. If I could go over or through the rubble I could scout the area
first and decide how to deal with any inhabitants.
I notice that at least one Super Mutant was allowed to reach a sniper
    post that I could not.

But Thief and Assassin's Creed had arbitrary walls, too. Thief
especially was limited to very small areas. Every game does at some point.

And besides, having a wall you can climb is no different than any other passable space except it is slower to get through.

Huh?? Yes, there are some restricted-access areas but within those
areas, there are multiple paths, some are deliberately set up for
scouting for back-door access for those with decent thief-type
skills...instead of rushing in the front-door with weapons blazing.
and of course in the Wasteland and in sundry areas of DC, you are
pretty free to roam in any direction... but be prepared to run fast if
    you are a low-level character...

For any impression of a conducted tour in FO3, you must have just
"followed your nose" through the Main Quest. Sad. Maybe the
true-corridor FPS games such as HL2 and the Doom series.. with a feast
of bang-bang-you're-dead and no real exploration/adventure/character-interaction... are more to your taste?

IMO F3 is considerable poorer than Oblivion & a
million miles below the Gothics (despite there problems)

Maybe you just prefer action-rpg games with lush scenery and no
    gunpowder or nukes?

Me, I enjoy all of the above-mentioned games. The post-apocalyptic
style of FO3 is a welcome change from the
    castles/dragons/tunics/swords grind. I really enjoyed FO1 and FO2, but
in today's gaming, their game-mechanics is a real drag.

The problem I had with the "arbitrary" walls was that I wanted to go to
some spot I could see but had to go searching for the "allowed" path.
This was really annoying DC as you had to figure out which subway
stations to use with which exits, etc. Plus it was really stupid that
you could not crawl over an obstruction but had to stand and jump over
it. I loved the ability in Assassin's Creed to scout out an area and determine the path I wanted to take rather than having to try and figure
out which streets, sewers, and subways I needed to take to get to a
    location.
One example was the Ranger rescue. I could hear the message in certain locations but could not travel in a straight line to the source and kept losing the signal and finally found the location by accident. In a game
like Assassin's Creed I would locate a mission and determine the best
set of rooftops and streets to reach it without having all the
obstructions placed by the programmer's insistence that a human being
    cannot climb over rubble.

    SPOILER references here...
    FALLOUT 3 Example:
In the main quest where we have to get to Galaxy News Radio where we get the quest to go to The Museum of Technology for a Radio Dish

We HAVE to go through that section meeting up with the Brotherhood of Steel (only one possible route)
& shooting the Giant Mutant with Mini Nuke (the game tells us where & to use it)
(we can't leave it alone or use any other method to do the poor thing in)
We can't go into GNR until this is done as instructed .

I spent ages trying to find an alternative route & sequence of events.
No other way..the game leads & instructs as like a small child.
And then there is only the one-way only-out back door to
have to go through the Metro to The Museum of Technology.
The insult I feel is that the games design implies choices & alternatives
    that are just not there.
And of cause there's no weather-ever ('THEY' could at least have used Fogs) Nothing in the skies, the water fizzes with Radioactivity but no life ...how lazy is that ?.

That is Wrong. I killed the Super Mutant using firearms only and the
game continued. True I had to do all the other steps up to that point,
but the manner of killing the "boss" was not set in stone like some games.

You are wrong. I played twice through that area and didn't even know
there was a mininuke there. I killed the big guy once with a sniper
rifle and once with mines and grenades.

As for only having one way to get into someplace or complete a quest I challenge you to find an RPG where this isn't true. Even the very best
ones like BG2 and Planescape are rife with areas where this is true.
Now SOMETIMES they offer you 2 or 3 ways but not always and probably not

    Like using the orbital bombardment?

The MIRV I think it's called. OCTOMIC orbital bombardment!

Yeah. That thing looks good at night. Find somewhere nice and high and nuke >> the neighbourhood.

Yeah, that was fun but limited. And given the damage that can be done at the end of Broken Steel, I was a little surprised at the massive damage caused to the alternative target.

LOL. That is really helpful. My current problem is finding a
shopkeeper who has enough money to buy all the junk I want to sell.
I've got to the stage where I only collect health aids and ammo from
    my victims.

I tend to store all my stuff back at Megaton and sell stuff on only when I
need cash. Which might be never since I have over 70k in caps and probably twice that or more in equipment. Harvesting Enclave gear makes this too easy. --- Synchronet 3.19b-Win32 NewsLink 1.113
